Buying a Unicycle
There are a few things to consider when buying a unicycle. Here’s a little lesson if you’ve never done it before:
The best option for a beginner is a 20" wheel unicycle with a straight fork, not a curved fork. This will be important later as you develop your skills.
DO NOT rush out and by the most expensive, prettiest bike out there. A unicycle ranging in the $70.00-$110.00 range is more than adequate.
Used cycles are perfectly acceptable as long as they are in good condition; wheel tread, straight forks and spokes, etc. Craigslist is a great resource for used unicycles however it’s hit or miss and it takes both constant monitoring of new postings as well as some knowledge (or access to knowledge) of unicycles.
Ebay and Amazon are two more great resource for unicycles. You can find both new and used cycles starting around $70.
Local bicycle stores generally have a unicycle for sale. The lack of choices makes this a less than excellent option. We have worked a great deal with Play-it-Again sports in Woodinville. They are friendly, helpful, and usually reasonably priced. Tell them you need a cycle for a new Cathcart club rider. They should be able to help with no difficulty.
Unicycle.com is the largest unicycling online store and they have a lot to choose from. They are reliable and easy to work with.
